Ask Aviva #14: Will I be able to get healthcare coverage as soon as I get to Israel?

Dear Aviva,

My wife and I are planning to return to live in Israel next year. I’m an Israeli citizen, who left after serving in the army, about 40 years ago, and my wife has never lived in Israel. I’ve got Multiple Sclerosis and arthritis. Will I be able to get healthcare coverage as soon as I get there?

Sincerely,

On my way to the Holy Land.

Dear On My Way,

I’m glad to hear you’re planning to come back to Israel. You will be eligible for healthcare coverage if you wait six months from your date of return, or if you pay the 11,000 NIS “sign me up now” for bituach leumi insurance payment, and prove that your life is again centered in Israel. I suggest that you take a pilot trip to Israel to reset things up, and make a stop at your local bituach leumi office, to ask them, specifically, what documents you will need to prove that you are, once again, based in Israel.

Yours in health,

Aviva
